Cupping Treatments for Pain

Cupping has been used as a holistic treatment method since the ancient human civilizations of the Eastern and Western world. It has been used to treat a variety of diseases as well as musculoskeletal conditions. In modern times, we use this for pain management associated with muscular tightness and spasm, inflammation, blood flow, scar tissue mobilization, and as a form of deep tissue massage. Dry cupping is the most common form of treatment, while wet cupping is more invasive. Cupping has been shown to be extremely effective in people who suffer from neck and back pain.

The science behind cupping is that the suction mechanism loosens adhesions and revitalizes the connective tissue which breaks down stagnant blood in the area. The release of toxins and excess fluids promote new blood into the area bringing with it oxygen and nutrients.

Cupping treatments are known by their trademark bruising. The color of the bruise tells the clinician a lot about the area. A light pinkish marking represents healthy blood circulation. A more red/burgundy coloring shows some moderate stagnation. And a deep purple coloring shows severe stagnation. Clinicians strive for the purple coloring as that is what pinpoints problematic areas.

Cupping is a safe and effective form of non-invasive holistic medicine that can be used on a wide variety of patients. You should not seek cupping on certain areas if you are experiencing skin inflammation, skin lesions, swollen lymph nodes, varicose veins, bone fractures, or sites of deep vein thrombosis.
