The Importance of Recovery

In the sports world, the term “recovery” has recently received a lot of attention. So what’s the big hype about post-exercise recovery? Well, the goal of muscle recovery is to manage and prevent muscle damage, as well as to alleviate delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), inflammation, and fatigue. There are two different methods of recovery: active recovery and passive recovery. Simply put, the difference between the two is that active recovery means staying physically active while recovering from high, intense bouts of exercise, while using non-strenuous movements; and passive recovery means to rest.

Active recovery is becoming more widely used as athletes are seeing the many benefits that it has on their bodies and exercise regimes. There’s some popular recovery equipment on the market that athletes are finding beneficial to use on their “recovery days”. Some of these include the Theragun or Hypervolt Massaging Gun, Rapid Reboot/Nordic Compression Sleeves, Joovv Red Light Therapy, and infrared saunas. These are being used in combination to decrease soreness and lactic acid built up in the muscles, increase circulation, eliminate toxins, promote muscle healing, and prevent injury.

Incorporating at least one recovery day into your exercise regime weekly, can not only help lead to quicker muscle recovery but also aid in injury prevention
